Thank You & Happy Holidays

We broke ground on some new trails this year and would like to thank all of you that helped to make this possible.

Special thanks goes to the Poedunk Board: Randy Meyer, Steve Cleek, Michael Henderson, Lee Turner, Quinn McLaughlin, Jed Colvin and Kristi Andresen for stepping up and literally signing up to establish our board and non-profit status and then getting out to help on the trail.

And big thank you goes to Marnie Bonesteel of the USFS and Cheryl Surface at Washoe County Parks.  They have helped us tremendously and enthusiastically on the Halo Trail and on the whole Peavine effort.  They made the new Keystone Canyon loop and West Keystone Canyon connection possible and will be continuing the grant next year to sign, delineate, and do more road rehabilitation in the non-motorized zone around Keystone Canyon.
Thank you Marnie And Cheryl!

Of course we would like to mention their respective agencies and co-workers, all who have helped and supported our trail efforts at Rancho San Rafael Park and the Halo Trail project on Peavine.

At Washoe County Parks we would like to thank Doug Doolittle, Andy Mink, Loring Larsen and Stephanie D’Arcy.

At the USFS, Ginny Wilson, Steve Hale, JoeElizabeth and Andrew Valestrino for thier approval of the Halo Trail alignment, the walk through, reroute consideration and their continued support.

To Jenny Scanland and Randy Moore at Nevada States Parks, and the 2008 State Rec Trails Committee for being so helpful with the Rec Trails grant process and ultimately approving the Halo grant project funding.

To Grant Nejedlo and Jerry Keir at the Great Basin Institute (the Nevada Conservation Corps) who have been so generous by partnering and accommodating our needs, scheduling their crews and providing the on the ground trail labor.

And last but not least, TO ALL OF YOU  who helped out on the trail this year.  Please see the 2008 Volunteer Hour Page for a complete listing.  We accrued 700 hours of volunteer effort this year!

Next year promises to be an even more productive year.  One mile of the Halo trail is complete and there is 5.5 more miles to go.  We are looking to complete it by years end.  So stay tuned, get a friend to join our email list and will let you know how you can help to complete the Halo trail.

Happy holidays and happy trails to you! -DB

Looking Great - Keystone Canyon Recap

Sunny skies, above normal temperatures and over 50 volunteers came out to help put the finishing touches on the new trail loop and east/west extension at the Keystone Canyon trail head.

This project is part of the Q-1 Grant managed by Washoe County Parks and the USFS. This is an exciting project that started last year with the construction of the Evans Canyon to Keystone Canyon Connector Trail. This fall Jim Jacobsen of Marin County, CA returned with his Sweco trail dozer to cut in a fresh 3/4 mile loop. Extending West out of the Keystone Canyon TH the new trail connects with existing routes and provides a non motorized motorized link to West Keystone Trailhead. The remaining Q-1 Grant funds will be used to rehabilitate degraded roads, install informational and directional signage, and deliniate the Keystone Canyon Recreation Area boundary –a designated non motorized zone encompassing Keystone Canyon and Rancho San Rafael Park.

The Poedunks thank all of the volunteers who came out and the following who made this project possible:

Washoe County Parks and Open Space Department:
Cheryl Surface - WC Parks Planner & Trails
Doug Doolittle - WC Parks Director
Stephanie D’Arcy - WC Volunteer Coordinator
Loring Larsen - WC Park Ranger
Carolyn Poissant - former WC Parks Planner who initiated the project

USFS - Humboldt Toiyabe National Forest:
Marnie Bonesteel
George Kerr
Sean Whalen

The Truckee Meadows Trails Association:
For their tools and crew leaders

And last but not least the crew leaders for the day:
Bill Von Puhl
Dick Benoit
Dale Beesmer
Jeff Dean
Jim Crompton
Brian Block
Randy Meyer
